I must have the wrong grid as my 25A has 6 letters...

What a shower they are... Can anybody tell me where to get the proper grid.

Angst, it's only 9ac and 25ac affected. Just colour in last and first squares respectively with a black pen. Much less traumatic than trying to find, let alone print, the correct grid.

about 6 hours at it - no real progress - need the four-letter "word" (A is 1 letter?). frustrating!!!!!!

I have 2 letters of the 4 - someone above has given the answer to 9 across which gives you the second letter pretty easily... Apart from that, I am totally screwed...

"Angst": this is the first time here I've ever had to say this, but quite honestly, I think you'd be very wise in this particular case to give up. As you can read in my comments above, this was the worst-designed puzzle I've ever done, but I can't really help you any more without letting the cat out of the bag for everyone, and that's (quite rightly with a competition puzzle) not popular. How about trying today's Spectator (if you can either buy it or are on the list to receive it from someone on the other forum): same kind of level, no technical difficulties downloading & entering, generally enjoyable. Sorry to be such a "wet blanket" after you've tried so hard, but sometimes imho the game's just not worth it. Don't despair! It's just too, too complicated!

To Angst and Dizoz...

5D is probably a good one to concentrate on to get you started, ignore "in which notable people" which is the defn for another clue.

Angst, dizoz, despite all the technical problems I enjoyed this. It's doable once you get going. Try 10ac, first part only, three letter anagram then you have a very limited number of choices for the first letter. Links with 20, then you have one of the four letters you need.
