Do you need a hint for any of mine, chrise?

Never ever would have got the Gordon one, except that's the only word I could think of that fits. Wjhat else is there GK?

Aristo: thanx 4 yr correction! Now I know why it says AC in my car (I thought that meant "air conditioning" -- or does it?). But where does the S come from then? Or otherwise I've misunderstood s'thing!

How do you mean, Rosalind? Can I help you with others? Or do you mean what I had thought of as alternatives for the "Gordon" one? If so, there are 2 other past tenses corresponding to the 3 crossers, & I found "overlaps" (prob. all irrelevant) by googling! Please clarify!

It does mean air conditioning (or conditioned). The S is as you said earlier. Between those is a word for actually, but you drop the T.

Chris & Ros: I took "ninth state" as a ref. to "one over the eight", but I may be completely wrong -- in which case my answer is probably wrong, tho' I can't see any other synonym for "prevents" that fits the crossers!
