I've finished "Men of letters" except for 22dn. I have S?U?G. Are these letters correct?

I have one of the gatekeeper solutions (the only possible word) but I can't decide which clue it is the answer to!

Well the U is! The only word I can think of that fits is STUNG but can't see how that could answer the clue.
Have more or less given up, anyway!

As you know I only started mine last night but, and I may be wrong, but I think your L is wrong :)

PS Don't give up Rosalind I have just started and I am really struggling :)

Thanks emrach - I was doubtful about the L myself.

P.S. I still can't find a word that makes sense, though!

Got it. Thanks emrach, never would have without your hint. I saw the word fitted but had to look up how it could posibly fir the clue. ;-((
