I think the general quality of the JE clues is really high and the sheer variety adds to the fun. Like aristo, I look for the name of the setters and I kind of know by now which will cause me grief and which will be gentler - no names, no pack-drill. And I still think the JE is one of the best things on the site. Long may it continue.

Oh Mr A I am still laughing after reading your comment. Thank you.
I know that my clues could often be improved- my last 1 d, answer carve, was probably a bit wordy, especially if we take into account Ximines rules. But , as Les says, it could become a chore. I think the JE is great and Les deserves lots of praise for all the work he does.

There was a clue in today's Guardian (Araucaria indeed!) that was hardly Ximenean:
Bitter start to a cry from the heart (5)
Unfair?

Hiya Chris,

I'm thinking 'Acrid' but can't see the 'rid'

Well apparently you have to translate the "cry from the heart" into FRench, then find a hidden word!

I'm not an expert with French Chris, you may have to explain or leave it open for the others to take a punt at the answer.
I shall wait to find out
