Afternoon all,

Here is the wordplay file for this month's Joint Effort, kindly put together by AB again who I thank very much.
Hope this explains some of your question marks.

Hi les and and AB
Thanks very much as always.
just a quick question - the solution given for 44d is LISTS but the wordplay is LISPS - which is correct?

Hiya Chris,

That was lucky, just tuned in.

The answer is 'LISTS'

Sounds affected in a way = Lisps
expressing softly = -P / with tip of (T)ongue
definitely isn't straight = Def - Lists (leans over)

Not Les' fault, his notes were perfect. My typing mistake. Apologies.

Thanks to Les for all the work to keep this going, & to AB for the clear wordplay layout.
Don't worry about the odd typo. Heck of a job to edit all that.

Managed only a small portion the first day, then put it aside (family situation). Didn't think I would complete it this time. Came back to it & finished shortly before the solution was posted. Pleasant surprise.
Tougher every month. The bar has certainly been raised !

My faves: two stars for 17A, 43A*, 35D -- excellent phrasing.
Also: 22A, 29A, 37A, 42A*, 1D, 6D, 46D.
* after seeing the wordplay.

Well done, everyone.

Thanks, guys

Slightly disappointed with the answer - I had gone for "lisps"!

@Chrise

44D did seem ambiguous at first. I had marked T/P in the margin, but went with LISTS.

However, on second reading it was clear:
The first part gives LISPS.
"expressing" = symbolize, force out, represent by (CH #2, 4, 6)
So the P is replaced with T. No argument there.

Did have a quibble with a couple of others re loose grammar & such, but we've seen that in the "professional" puzzles, so what the heck.

Still a fun game.

I don't think we want to join the Ximenes camp. (-;
