livs: new (N) soldier (GI). "rejected" = reversed. Hence IGN at the end.

Yes, I was working on the same lines as you, James, then I saw it the other way round. I don't know how much you're supposed to give away here, but I meant 4-star = general (shortened version) + is, mixed up, then 'n'.

That works for me and I'm sticking to it. :-) Still don't know why he's rejected. Maybe someone will enlighten us.

hi ixion, james et al, finished, but noted james's comment re 3d 500 metres. i think it is either a typo error (s/b 50) or it is to interpreted as suggested - 501 but broken into 50 (L) and 1(i) ????

Hey Diz, almost missed the name.

Where have you been hiding? Running with the dingoes?

Careful, mate. I hear they eat babies. (-;

Been away for a couple of weeks, so got to this a bit late. Re 7dn: nut is another word for en, as in printing measurement.

I know it's been "explained" earlier, but I still don't get the wordplay for 17ac.

Thanks Peterm - I was hoping you'd enter the fray and explain that one, I scanned through "nut" in Chambers but missed it.
