If it helps, the definition in 25ac is "trailer" (think in terms of someone or something falling behind). The first 2 letters are transmuted.

Left with one(having finally picked this back up)and may have gone wrong somewhere, would appreciate a gentle nudge in the right direction.

1D News: "Run away from dog in pound!"(8)

I have letters in place...?E?E?A?? after transmuting the first two letters of 8,10 and 12A. The first two of 14A also seem to be the ones requiring transmutation which would make the final letter (most likely) E or A.

Suspect I have gone wrong but can't see where, the clue itself before transmutation completely eludes me.

Thanks

Hi ixion.

Same boat as you. Came back after 3 weeks, & the Spec. Xmas & 2044, to take another shot.

For 1D thought TELECAST, but can't make the wordplay fit, & it doesn't work with 14A which should start with ?E.

Might have to let this go. So close!

Happy New Year.

Finally got it.

Interesting concept, though think it's been done before, but the execution wasn't elegant.

Three answers with possible duplicates: 6D, 7D, & 14A.

4D & 16A with very similar results, unless I messed them up.

Oh well, Monday's another day (month?). Hope the next one goes smoother.

It was a struggle alright Syzygy...peterms clue on another thread got me over the line - I've definitely got two options in Chambers for 7D but not for 6d or 14A as far as I can see.

You're up early, though I'm guessing at your time zone. And I'm up late, waiting for an email.

Missed the other thread. That might have helped. Took me forever to work in the "dog" & the rest of it.

Re duplicates (hope the spacing holds):
6D can start with PAr - Protactinium
-------------- or bAT - Astatine

Both in Chambers.

14A can start with TE - Tellurium
--------------- or FE - Iron

The latter not in Chambers, but a couple of citations, including the 1913 Webster's Dictionary. Where can you get one?

Sorry to be so pedantic, but I can't rest easy until the beast is dead, so to speak.

Time for bed.

Laimīgu Jauno Gadu!

See what you mean syzygy...I went with PA though AT would probably have been better, being specified.

A real brain-twister this month, but am determined to finish (within the next 12 hours!) with your help folks!

Am struggling with the 'pre-transmutation' solutions to:

20 ACROSS Sets up officers in law (8)
(No point giving any letters here, but obviously ends in 's')

21 DOWN Guitarists or fighters? (6)
(My lack of pop culture knowledge shows here - only term I can think of for guitarists is 'axemen')

Once I have solutions as per given clues, will hopefully manage the 'transmutations'

Thanks in advance

Kiwisolver....

20A is a double defn - you need a word meaning sets up(organises)and a plural of officers in law(US)

21D you need a slang word for guitar(ists) in the forest perhaps
