I think your problem with 4d is that you have the wrong 'sense' of '(sic)'; it doesn't really mean 'not my mistake' although it does usually follow a mistaken spelling/usgae etc.
It means 'as originally used/written/spelt.' The user of '(sic)' is just saying that the originator of what's being quoted wrote it that way.
So '(not sic)' meaning 'not as used/written/spelt' seems a perfectly good, in fact inspired, anagram indicator ~ hats off to A yet again IMO.

'usgae' (sic) ~ meant 'usage' Doh!!

thanks JS, i did sort of 'sense' that i might not have the true spirit of [sic].
not sure about "inspired" but,along with the other [sic]in the clue,it is far from sloppy
(how dare i say that about A?)

it must be almost as hard to compile these odd puzzles(alphabetical jigsaws etc)as they are to solve.

the first word of 19D is a shortened (headless)form of normal spelling
