OK folks, I almost have this. An interesting offering from Araucaria for sure. 13D and 25A; well I think I know what they are but I sure don't like them. So now that I've made the effort to do this on Friday evening in Toronto perhaps I can help out some of the folks on the other side of the pond.
Good luck.

I actually thought 13d and 25ac were very good ~ I wonder if the solutions are terms better known in the UK hence your comment.
Are they used in Canada?

20A - 20 Pirate doesn't finish nasty beer (8)

Thought this was pillager initially

(bitter) pil(l)lager

but it seems it has to start(by a process of elimination) with V

vil(e)lager?....how does this equate with pirate?

and are the special instuctions correct? - I have 12/28 with alternative solutions

Hi ixion

Re 20ac ~ yes Pillager/Villager but it's one of the 14! So you have to choose the 'P' or the 'V' and as you say it has to be the 'V'.

I've got 14 clues/answers that fit the instructions so they are spot-on, as expected from this setter. :-)

PS

Sorry ixion, just realised you might not have spotted:

Pirate = pillager.

20a is one of the special clues - so the Pirate is Pillager but you write in Villager(i tried to think of a clue but they all seemed too obscure or obvious).
13d and 25ac still elude me.
