Nearly a full grid and I’d like to carry on. The one solution short is 31 down. Could anyone give me a hint please? I’ve the same letter starting 42 ac and the truncated 44 ac. Presumably I’ve gone wrong on somewhere.
Thanks all

Why do you think 44a should be truncated?

Williamseal, if you truncated 44a then you could end up with the same first letter as 42a. If you squashed 44a then you might end up with a number of letters in the relevant cell.
The definition of 31d is the last 6 words of the clue, one of which requires a letter change.

Thanks Smellyharry and EsPeBe. I can see that I have misinterpreted the squashing/truncating and will have another bash toimorrow.
(incidentally my grandchildren are intrigued by SH's name)

I set my profile up after a few beers and thought it was hilarious. Have profoundly regretted it since the following morning, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change it.

Just one loose end. How did 22a get parsed? I have the answer and what sort of clue it is, but just can't fathom the wordplay. Otherwise a fun puzzle, and for me, just the right amount of head scratching before rummaging in the cupboard.

Take is R (chess), change A for Academy in a film format for an R to give the answer.

I hesitate to differ, but R (take) is short for Latin recipe. Nothing to do with chess
