Despite today’s temporal upset, a very gentle start to Sunday. I don’t usually like Spoonerisms, but today’s made me smile.

Thanks to Everyman, that was good fun but with a few minor quibbles...

19a - Didn't know that word for "pretentious" even though I had the first 3 letters thanks to the wine being a favourite of mine:-)🍷

10a - Still don't fully understand where the last 5 letters come from and am also puzzled by the definition - I've always associated the answer with being skinny or unhealthily thin but not "inferior", and Chambers seems to agree. No doubt there will be words that are linked to both but I really don't want to get into a whole debate like last week where justification was given for going from "is it" to 'really' to 'say' to "eg" (then why bring it up Bren! 😩)

17a - Thought the surface was ruined by the use of "what".

COD:- A toss-up between 20a and 7d - short and sweet:-)

Sorry,

I was messing around with the oder of points in my post and accidentally included 19a as a quibble and not, as it should have been, an example of my lack of knowledge:-)

There seem to be quite a few tenuous definitions this week - 'Stuff' (17a), 'smashing' (13d) and 'most large' (18d), as well as 10a. But I'm most mystified by 25a - the answer reveals itself once the crossers are in, but how you get there from the clue defeats me.

Hi Phil,

25a - This is tricky because many of the letters in the answer appear in a word in the clue that is preceded by what could easily be an anagram indicator. The answer is actually derived from "cryptically for taste"?

Brendan,

I think the second half of 10a comes mostly from the sticks though I'm not sure why the plural.

Is it just me or is this Everyman harder than usual? I found yesterday's Prize easier than this!

Ahh, thanks Bren. I think I (just about) get it now. The 'cryptically' indicates that the answer is something that might appear in a crossword clue, I guess.
