Agree. I can construct a very tenuous solution.
Supports could be a bract and pelta is one such. Anagram is plate!
Told you it was tenuous.
But I have a difficulty with 38d
Scottish metal and carbon removed from mountain stones.
I have ?ien.

Your letters should be ?irn. Think of a pile of stones on a mountain from which you remove the first letter; then look up the four-letter word you're left with in the BRB

I thought 13A was doo, Scots for dove, and an anagram ("new") of sports, giving doorposts, hence "supporting items on the way in". But according to Chambers, lilo is the only possible solution to 6D. Shurely shome mishtake?
