Brilliant Jono that makes perfect sense! Actually a very clever device that might come up again, so worth filing away in what passes for my brain! Well spotted, thank you.

Oh very good(!) - thanks jono. Serves me right for rushing it.

Jono, I don’t follow your comment about splitting the N and O in no. Reading the hyphen as a minus is surely right, but NG is in Chambers as “no good”, so don’t you just subtract both letters from warmonger to give the anagram fodder?

Good day all. Enjoyed today, especially this forum with some great queries and explanations.

My CoD is 24a (only just worked out what the prison is).

Thought 12a was clever. Never heard of 9a.

All in all, fun, trickier than last couple of weeks for me, but not too hard, about right.

Wishing you a storm free Sunday.

I agree, treat the hyphen as a minus sign. (One to remember).

Quisling@25, yes of course, much better. I thought my explanation was too much of a stretch. Thanks.

Morning all, enjoyed this one, I do like an educational primarily. Does 18d need the ‘in pain’? I can see a word that does mean that but the wordplay suggests one that means crying out, unless I’m missing something.
