After a frightening 30 minutes watching what #47 is planning to do I've returned to this to calm my nerves. I can find only 8 of the "ten thematic clue answers", all from Downs, whose initials spell THE WARDS. Either Mr Google hasn't heard of the other two or I'm going mad, which - after those 30 minutes - might well be a blessing. Are the other two also Downs?

There are two among the acrosses, and both come up if you google “xxxx village”

I suggest you ring the initial letters as the preamble suggests, as it will help you locate the other two

A lot completed but I'm stumped by finding the ten answers in the grid. I can't even find one! Are they all examples of the title? Could someone give me perhaps the first letter or two of one of the entries I'm looking for, please.

Glad I’m not the only one still picking at this! I have the shape and name of village. Don’t understand connection to staplecross. Don’t understand “ten thematic clue answers” Help gratefully received. Thanks!

Google is your friend here, they are all pretty obscure (well, to me as an Irish man) and are found in both across and down clues. Try a few different entries plus v?????? And you'll find them

The answers beginning with W are two of the ten, sybila. If you google each answer followed by the title (singular), ten of them will be hits. Ring the first letter of each as you go along, and at the end they should spell a novel which gave its name to a place.

Bubber, even to an Englishman they are obscure! I had only heard of a few

That's a few more than me Quisling. The only one I'm aware of is the rather emphatic one at the end!
