Thanks Brendan. I think that I would have been staring at that clue for hours. Annoying when it was the last one in of, dare I say, a fairly straightforward crossword.

I can guess the answer to 1d, there is only one thing it can be, but the parsing eludes me. Any hints please?
Otherwise quite an enjoyable puzzle, thanks Everyman.

I raised an eyebrow @1d. "Supermarkets" is not my first thought. They would generally have a hyphen.

I think they count as a supermarket chain. But yes I agree about the hyphen. Without the hyphen it is more accurate to say cages not opening.

It took me a while to get going this morning due to being out on the town last night. My local branch of the 1d supermarket has no hyphen on the sign above the door.

Wrote in 19a and 1d from crossers without parsing. 19a a bit shaky IMO, I figured 1d had to be a UK thing unknown to me.

Perhaps hyphens cost extra……..

I have solved 12 clues. Better for me but still extremely difficult.

For starters, I have no idea how to approach 1d, 3d and 9a.

I don’t see where the definitions are at all!

And this is despite me solving 1a.

Do you have any tips?

9a is rather nice. It's a French "Peter" around a possible girlfriend to give a city residence that isn't the main one for that person/family.
