Nunoesque, I first attempted Everyman in the 60s, pre-internet and pre-forums, with the help of just dictionary and thesaurus. The only way to learn was to wait until the solution appeared in the following week's Obsie and work out how the clue led to the answer. Apologies if you already do this! I nevertheless still come to the forum and find the comments I find helpful and interesting. I am always impressed by those who regularly complete Everyman much more quickly than I do!

Another example of an auto-antonym is SANCTION.

You are right Chrise on 5d, I had noticed that intuitively, but forgot about it as I wrote my post!

(I do own such an item!)

1a in its first definition usually has the word "to" attached - but archaically not always.

Nunoesque, fifteensquared.net has notated solutions every day for the normal cryptics. Delayed for the prize puzzles until published in paper. Useful for getting the hang of things.

No one seems to have queried 17a. but I cannot make out the parsing of it.
Any hints please?

Hi coffindodger
If you replace the first letter by another one (as indicated in the clue) you get a different meaning, also in the clue.

LOI 1a. Came across it 5 mins later reading review of latest film featuring Daniel Craig (or is it Craig Daniel?) in the Guardian.

"Haste makes waste" is a variation of "More haste, less speed". First recorded in 1542, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
Whenever I hear 1ac, in both senses, I think of bosoms. But that, sadly, is the kind of guy I am.

Ah, thanks biggus56: that explains 20 perfectly. Now I think about it, I think I must have seen or heard that variant before, but it had definitely slipped my mind.
