I guess that's why they are called hiddens.

Can anyone enlighten me ( pun intended) on 'illumination' in 11a?

Today's i found tricky and 1a particularly not GK for me.

Liked 5d - a double homophone?

Cannot spot phil10000 three pairs - can only see the rhyming pair. Enjoyed Maddison's pair however.

Yevrah. I took 'lacking illumination' to mean darkness (at night for instance).

Yes, same here Jazz. It’s not an actively one would generally undertake in the day time (unless you’re a farmer of course :-)

Thanks jono and jazzgirl, of course, now I see it (yet another intended pun).

I always forget that 13 is Steinbeck - was so taken as a teenager with Julie Harris - and of course there was James Dean and the great Raymond Massey ... and the theme music by Leonard Rosenman is to die for. Makes Cain and Abel a bit tame ...

Chrise - Indeed it does, hence the 'almost' in the hint. (It was as close as I could get I'm afraid.)

Yevrah - Before 11a and 20a, one might pull on a 10a of 16a, and even pop a 25a in a 17a!
