14a is a play on “split”, once they’ve left they do the opposite of splitting…

Many thanks, Chrise and Jono. I get it now. Another one I'll file in the harrumph column though!

I agree with Jono - a fun crossword. I was surprised by all the queries on the forum but they seem to have been answered. On 22a the problem seems to be that 'characters' has long since been rumbled and no longer misdirects the redoutable solvers on here.

PS As so often these days, I preferred Picaroon's Quiptic, in which 1d is pretty much the most astonishing anagram I've ever seen.

Just dashed off the Quiptic, Phil, and I agree: 1d the best of a number of fine anagrams in a perfect Quiptic. Though I enjoyed Everyman too, for all the quibbles.

“Punctuation gags” seem to be popular with Guardian setters recently. Everyman used # (hash) a couple weeks ago and we had a : (colon) removal from Qaos this week.
I’m sure there have been more.

I quote the nibbles in the forum today.

Sorry, return of the reverend getting me carried away.

I note the quibbles in the forum today but all in all I thought a good puzzle. 6d is my COD.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Puzzled by the astonishment at Quiptic 1d. I found it straightforward, what am I missing?

The tougher anagrams in today's Everyman, are another matter.
