Ok I think Ive got all this now - I thought this was a fantastic puzzle - I cant solve many but I kept going and glad I did - but how does 9 dn work - of course I can see hit and mulberry but where does the missing letter go ?

Ah I see I had the correct entry by default as the L was there to start with - Chambers Crossword Dic has both 3 letter words for batter and I didnt look at the R one - thanks

It sounds like a horse (3 letters) of the same dusky colour.
