This was challenging and enjoyable. The final change was cleverly constructed, and satisfying! I have one slight quibble .. the extra letter in 11a seems to be an A, whereas the phrase from all the extra letters seems to require an E at that point.

g9p, the extra letter certainly could be an A, leaving a word meaning body of troops, but I’m guessing you have to remove the E to leave a word meaning cairn or rock pillar, which I think also satisfies the answer. That’s how I rationalised it, anyway

Thanks quisling, quite right! I had missed that definition in my first perusal of Chambers, and never went back to check again. Those long entries are often worth reading twice!

Thank you, Ifor. Excellent puzzle and the final touches were elegantly done. The quotation springs to my lips on a daily basis in response to asinine and/or offensive behaviour. Funny that there is more of it as I get older…..
