The spelling of the string at 2A doesn't tie in with the answer to the clue (unless he has an alternative spelling in the original, rather than the film). And I can't work out the final step yet.

I had no problem with the spelling at 2a, and Wiki confirms it in the film and the book. I thought “doable” was an odd verdict. This was a typically superior offering from Ifor, in my book. Excellent

Just had the most amazing piece of luck and coincidence.

I was 2 extra letters short, one of which was 16d, and struggling to make any sense of the ones I had when I noticed that there appeared what looked like the name of a famous philosopher!

It wasn't, of course, but Googling that 'error' along with the letters I had enabled me to figure out the message et al in no time:-)

Still some tidying up to do so no doubt I'll be back later today, but I am glad that I can at least go to bed knowing what the source material is.

Fantastic puzzle from Ifor, and really enjoyed reading about the work in question. I do have two queries, though....

39a - Stacked hand critically, with large number left in end (6)

I have the answer and know the extra letter and can see that the first 3 letters are "hand", but for the life of me I cannot see how the final 3 (pre change) come from "critically, with large number left in end".

I'm assuming the character "free to go" is the 5 letter one, but after he is erased it leaves 2 unchecked letters - do we just put them in the order they appear in the unaltered word? Also, the preamble says that the changes create new words but, after the character's been erased, the remaining 5 letters don't make a word - they do make a 2 letter one and a 3 letter one but as there's no line separating them it doesn't seem right?

Touch of class from Ifor, as per, with a lovely final stage.

The ‘critically’ in 39a refers to the definition of hand, according to Chambers

Would love a nudge towards what I’m supposed to do with the letter strings - gobbledygook to me at the moment.

Also my message from the extra letters is nonsense…!

Full grid save for the gaps in the four perimeter answers. Any help appreciated.

The letter strings are anagrams of four characters in a work. The phrase derived from the removed letters is not necessarily in English.
