Got it, thanks Mattrom, thanks Thom - never considered initials for the writer!

On the highlighted word, I've looked at every definition in Chambers and none even come close to matching the deleted letters message - what am I missing?

I'm an idiot, please ignore that last post. I thought Thom's reply was referring to 22d - I had the wrong word!!

For the record, I saw the word 2 lines directly above the correct one and didn't look any further. Oddly, Chambers doesn't give it as a theme word but I'm sure it's a slang term for it - isn't it?

Re 22d, if you have the extra letter, F, the parsing is 1,2,3, university, Greek letter, writer’s initials (Treasure Island). Displays is the definition. No more to it than that, surely?

Sorry Quisling, my posts and queries got mixed up. 22d is all solved, no problems there.

My error was highlighting the wrong theme word and then obviously, finding that it didn't match the message.

All sorted now though.
