Thanks Graham! I've now got 26D and 10A and have noticed a similarity between clue answer and thematic entry. Now trying to figure out how that applies to the others, as the obvious answers aren't quite fitting in...

Thom, if you have a copy of Chambers it will help. A couple were completely new to me but they're all there under an appropriate heading.

Thanks to Ace of Hearts for a fun and original puzzle.

Can anyone explain the parsing of..

22d - Displays university letter by adventure writer (6)

I have the answer and deleted letter but can't make head nor tail of the wordplay. "University" could be the first letter but, other than that...?

Also, the I've looked up the highlighted word but am struggling to match it to the message from the deleted letters. Obviously it's a synonym for the 5 themed answers but what has 'a hand's agreeing to a poor remuneration package' got to do with it?

Hi Scurry,

17a - Is an anagram/'divers' and there are two of the deleted letter - definition is last 6 words (i hadn't come across it before, at least not the whole thing)

Hi Brendan - I couldn't see 22D either, but I found some justification for the wordplay buried in an archaic OED definition - it's to do with tailors? Perhaps an argument that the puzzle is pushing the boundaries of esotericism here but anyway.

Brendan, re 22d. Wordplay is 'university' (1) + (Greek) letter (2) initials of adventure writer.
