7d. Def. is 'attack'. 5-letter book (which includes the extra letter) goes over the word Coetzee might use for plot, followed by usual abbrev. for line.

I have solved all the clues except for 30 down which I cannot parse. I have the answer because I have a full grid, but I still cannot see it. Also stuck on the end-game because we are not told the size of the thing we are looking for. Seeing that Chambers actually gives an example of what we are looking for, it would be rather neat if that is the one, but there are some other (bigger) candidates. Hints appreciated.

30D - Put the word stock or issue after the singular and it’s in Chambers.

Gosh, that was a clever construction. All done except I can't see the wordplay for 35 if anyone could give a gentle nudge please.

What an amazing construction! Just checked in to see if I could get the three clues I didn't understand explained (they were all already there, so that's reassuring). Not that it mattered much, since I was able to verify my answers, and I also found a mistake I'd made in another answer which would otherwise have gone unpunished.

Thanks, slowly. I'd looked at it backwards as indicated by the clue but never thought to look in Chambers. Not a word I knew and I'd been fixated on a different type of 4th word.

Keen to find the construction, where might the title lead, please, hw7? Any other hints? Got full grid and instructions.
