I have an extra 'i' left over after ticking off the unchecked letters given in the phrase at the foot of the preamble.
As there appears to be an error (an extra word) in the preamble, I'm a little less cofident in Kruger's puzzle than I would normally be (but I have severe doubts about my adding-up too).

Does anyone have the same issues?

...and misspelling confident hasn't helped my confidence.

Yes there are two "I"s in treated letters but they are both checked by crossed. Of this I am pretty confidet.

Thanks - that's what I have too (there's an unchecked 'i' in the first rejigged entry but it belongs to the original answer).
One possibility is in a short down answer - the first letter is unchecked and could make a thematic word we often see in crosswords, but the original doesn't seem to equate). But one of the longer downs has a change that isn't justified in Chambers (although I've seen it in its thematic context).
That apparent error in the preamble could be fixed with a simile (but, again, I can't find any justification for this).
I also have an issue with the very last part of the endgame - the ''equally valid conclusion'' doesn't work grammatically, if it's supposed to read on.

My cofidence is waning (but it is Kruger, and I suspect he must be right).

Sorry, Kruger - just reread and found ''after changing an article''. Forget my final quibble.

Well guys, I am impressed because I know I can’t get to grips with Kruger today. Will you please just tell me if 21d is in the dictionary?

@drxx I think that stray I must just be an error :-( which is a bit of a shame ... it wouldn't seem consistent to have to change *only* an unchecked letter, and any further single themer would remember the nice symmetry of equal numbers of themers on the appropriate side of the 'division' - a nice touch in a super puzzle, slow going for a while until *just* enough misprints to reveal the quote ... thanks Kruger.
