1a is usually single letter for son then a word that means clumsy, think zombie or monster walking style. One is not alert (awake) when in this state.
Pulling in 9a is in the sense of horses pulling carts. The whole thing is something you might use to bind (attach) a piece of paper to a notice board, hope that helps?

It was a good puzzle, on which I needed a bit of help to solve 9A and 3D, neither of which I'd heard of before.

But can someone please explain what role the word "canned" plays in the 24A clue "Hoarding William's canned food" ?

This was not hard to solve, especially with letters from other answers, and the wordplay almost makes sense.

But I don't even see the definition anywhere in this clue!

And now the use of "canned" makes perfect sense, since "hoarding" is the definition.

24a - "canned" acts a containment indicator, so the 4 letter "food" is 'canned'; by the 5 letter "William's" (remember to include the 'S)

I do not understand this clue at all!

If you stay at a pub or a B&B, you often get _____ & lodging. Contained (= canned) within William's (but shorten William to its common alternative).

Food as in ***** and lodging I think?

Just about right level for me to get them all in but need a bit of thinking.

LOI was 9D. I had another answer, a piece of exercise equipment, that fitted all the other letters. It even made a pair with 3D, just didn't make any sense with the first half of the clue. Got there in the end though and that fits even better with 3D
