Happy days! Quite a quick solve like it used to be. FOI 1D LOI 10A. A rather pedestrian effort.

I have enjoyed the harder examples of late (and was intrigued by the Editor's denial that they were more difficult) but this was a pleasant enough return to the gentler type of Everyman.

Two left to do (19d and 26a) but apart from a couple of parsing queries (can't see where 4th 's' comes from in 13d, and for that matter the final 's' in 7d) I thought this was a good start to Sunday!

PS not sure how 10a is a 'file', either?

Agree this was straightforward, but a couple of clues I thought were not great. 13D seems to omit one letter from the wordplay; and one of the two definitions in 5D I thought was a bit of a stretch. Still, one of the rare cases where I managed to solve every clue in clue order, which always gives a sense of achievement.

Hi Steve,

7d - the S at the end is from "president", and that goes around/'concealing' "legal cash"

I'm as baffled as you by the 4th S in 13d.

For my part, I can't really see how the answer to 5d means either "believes in" or "counterfeits".

Also, while the answer to 20a is clear. I'm not sure how it's derived from "bug... bear"?

Also, how does 10a mean "file's one showing"?

Brendan @5. Thanks, I assume that 'Ps' is an accepted abbreviation for 'President' then? 20a is rather good I think. 1st word in clue is def, 2nd is synonymn for 1st word in the answer and rest of clue is an example of the 2nd word in the answer.

Ah, that's brilliant Steve, many thanks. I had the definition as "cricket perhaps" - which, looking at it now, makes no sense at all.

Yes, Chambers gives that as an accepted abbr. for "president".

Ooh yes this was much better and more straightforward than recent ones. Hurrah. Re 20a I think if you give someone ***** you bug them, and also if you ***** at something you bear it.
Is 5d relating to a fake name maybe?
I did like 9a!
Have a lovely sunny Sunday.

Brendan @5 one 5d a false identity, for example. If one 5d something, that means (a bit loosely I think) that you believe it.

Brendan @6. Agree. A 10a is not a file, although I suppose in computing terms you might use the contents of a file to construct a 10a? But that would be like saying a house is a brick, wouldn't it...?
