Well so far it's a bit of a slog, have completed most of the grid, identified ]I think the first and last words, which is not that helpful. Have made a cursory grid stare but no name popping out, so will stick it in a spreadsheet so that I can go through it systematically (groan).

So at the moment I'm in the 'this is a lousy puzzle' camp. In the highly unlikely event that I complete it no doubt I will instantly convert to 'this is a brilliant puzzle' camp.

That's how this works, right?

Looking at the various posts it's clear that even if you complete the first stage it's not easily going to fall into place so I'm bailing out before I waste even more time. Already I've broken my golden rule not to spend more than two hours on one of these dratted things.

Congrats to those who've completed it. I look forward to the solution when my response is either 'doh, that was obvious' or 'thank the lord I gave up when I did'

Or give up, that's what I'm doing.

Blimey. A quasi instruction. Just what the doctor ordered (not).

The ONE thing I am clear about is that this puzzle is not about golf.

I've got a few blank cells in my brain, is that what I should have at this stage?

I had to look up Verulamian and I still don't get it.

St Albans.

Francis Bacon.

Did either produce a calendar that doesn' t start 1 Jan? 1 April maybe?

I guess you have to be erudite to solve these puzzles which is why my success rate peaked at around only 60%.
