Now only 39a is escaping me - the magic of posting nearly worked!

39A - the thematic item here was unfamiliar to me. Def is first 2 words; synonym of next 2 words goes inside 'riverless' spas.

30D - can't really add anything to what's said below - the last 4 words of the clue (wordplay) give , IMO, a fairly obscure indication to the last 4 letters of the answer.

4D - abbreviation inside 6-letter word meaning 'of those folk'

JB54, I have just cracked 39a. Never heard of that thematic item either. My problem was where "not river" was applicable to, and needless to say, I had been fixated on the wrong part of the wordplay. Thanks for 4d - now all parsed and all complete.

30 has done for me as well! I sorted all but four before a late supper last evening, and have completed all but the troublesome 30 after battling with an overgrown bamboo shrub this morning. The fact that it is thematic has been revealed so can I safely ask if the removal involves two letters?
