Thanks, Treiziste - and glad you got the puzzle finished. I do that crossword anyway, but I know some other Forum members don't see it - and enjoy the chance to try some clues from a different publication.

14d A senior, given time, gets caught in fact, in "flagrante" - "marvellous!" (9) has got me puzzled. I have F?N?A?T?C so (assuming the crossers are right) I guess it's "fantastic", which is "marvelous" but the parsing escapes me. I can see that "in", "fact", "c(aught)" and "t(ime)" might be somehow involved, but...?

Thanks Jordan, that makes sense. I was getting confused by "caught" thinking of it in the cricketing sense rather than meaning it is "caught" inside the anagram on "in fact". Much appreciated.

All finished now except 23A - is it the top of the roof, formed by dropping the first four letters of a bird? If so, is 'bastard' a definition of those first four letters?

No, it's just the B from Bridge, game, that gets dropped - and The B abbreviation is listed in Chambers.

PS It's always good to give the clue...

I think you are right about the answer but I offer this different parsing.
The game is a card game.
B = bastard (not sure why) which is dropped or let go.

Thanks Malone for explaining the B abbreviation.
( I didn't see your answer before posting mine)

Unlockholmes, I checked Chambers for the B abbreviation, it's there.

Thanks, Unlockholmes. We crossed! I think the abbreviation must be used in ... genealogy type stuff perhaps?
