Thanks drjax and alab. After a bit of head scratching, the penny finally dropped! That's actually a very clever clue.

Staring at it, made me realise I hadn't parsed 3d either, so I was wondering if I'd got both 9a and 3d wrong. Then after getting 9a, the penny dropped for 3d also!

Re 1d, did anyone else think, not just rulers, but also butterflies?!

Julesvern, yes! I also always think butterfly when I see “comma”.

I found this the easiest since I started at Christmas. Except...for 14a
which is completely eluding me, unless I've a few crossers wrong.
Which, apart from 6d and its "cattle" all parse and make sense.

How do I get in to them?

I have read the hints for 5d…I remain none the wiser.

10a is a double definition , one is a homophone. I got complely the wrong answer at first.

5d is a typographical answer

22a I struggled with and can't parse, so cannot help as it may be wrong.

27a the pugilist will come home with this visual memory
