Merry Christmas and thanks to Maskarade. Always challenging and enjoyable ,my favourite compiler, found it easier than last year which I remember completing while spending the holiday in Phoenix.

Many thanks Jono, a 'wood for the trees' issue. I just didn't see the alphabet wrap around at 9 even though it crossed with another wrap around at 8. D'oh

First post here so hope it works. Enjoyed the crossword and have completed. Unsure of the parsing for 55a. Should it be ego rather than ago? Is it just an andlit clue? Thanks.

I really don't like these tricksy specials the Guardian puts into the paper a few times a year. I won't make any attempt at it.

Thought I had solved this, but only found 25 trios and 2 not 1 ran consecutively. Seem to be missing an XYZ trio and I could only get that with a weird respelling of 41a answer. Will look forward to the solution!
