JustSolve, my way in was 5a (which is normal) and then the two down clues 6 and 7, which come off it, both of which are thematic…

So I'm trying to tackle this section by section. There's an obvious answer to 2d but I can't make it parse with sausage.

Rocky, 2d is thematic so three letters are not clued. The first word is probably not the first word that comes to mind. You have to treat sausage and rump the same way.

OK Jono, then I was on the wrong track.

I enjoyed this, but have one instance of puzzlement: I have consecutive trios in both 8 and 9, which contradicts the rubric. Any thoughts?

Biggus, exactly the same for me…

The triplets in 8 and 9 are not in alphabetical order

But then , that contradicts the statement that answers contain triplets in alphabetical order..... well, we all knew what he meant.
