I did not get it at first but "4 capitals" are lonDON cardIFF belfAST and endinbuRGH.

Last 3 letters here match last 3 letters of paulh's words.

Clarifying the Supplementary Challenge:
BelfAST, CardIFF, LonDON, EdinbuRGH are the UK's four capital cities.
ToAST, ClIFF, RaDON, ??RGH are four five-letter words which have the same three final letters. You had to find that fourth word and only BURGH, AARGH and MURGH fit the bill.

That is why it is so incredible that paul@3 unwittingly prefaced his tweak with AARGH!
