Nothing to do with elements or toxins.

Remember we now have AARGH as one of the answers to complete the quartet.

Paul - my off-the-cuff remark has been masquerading as a masterstroke of geniius? Pure serendipity! Sadly I am none the wiser as to the supplementary.

That is an amazing coincidence. This supplementary challenge, if too obscure to be fair, has been worth it just for your AARGH.

The challenge is still on to find the other answer (+ a dubious one). To recap: TOAST, CLIFF, RADON, AARGH.
Five-letter words only, what else could have been chosen instead of AARGH to echo a connection in that quartet. I would expect some simple googling to find the answers.

Hint: the key is in the last three letters of each word. They are the last three letters of a unique quartet.

Ah, very good, should have got it earlier…

BURGH would work I think and is the intended meaning in the longer word

Yes indeed, jono@34. BURGH and AARGH are the only valid five-letter Scrabble words ending in -RGH. Anyone know an Indian word for chicken, which I have seen on some restaurant menus? It does appear in some dictionaries but is not valid at Scrabble. It reminds me of being somewhat miffed to have SUEY (as in Chinese chop suey) disallowed. Incidentally UEY is a useful three-letter word, probably familiar to mattrom. She may have done one if she drives a car.

You are therefore the true winner, Jono. I had your 'Little Women' challenge in mind when choosing a group of four words and having word endings as a key factor. In choosing the four UK capitals I was remembering my geography teacher explaining that Edinburgh and Middlesbrough were major exceptions to the usual -borough place name endings.

Anyway, voting now open for RADON.

Oh yes, I’ve definitely seen MURGH on an Indian menu :-)
