Practically there! I want 17Dn to generate an R as a correction but cannot seem to do it… any help pls Drxx…?

Second word, h1982 - first 3 words are the def then an anagram.

Having difficulty with 39 - I know the misprint, but my brain won't process the corrected clue. Also can't find the second clash (unless it's in 39 of course). I can see the two things A did, but one of them is en clair, sans misprint. More head-scratching needed before I set out to change far too many clocks.

39 - remove the legal abbrev. from a 7 letter word for a ''huge, often bleak building'' (Chambers).

Ah! well and truly red-herringed by 24 then. All done now

I am struggling with this primarily because I only have seven of the ten adjusted words, but three of those are too short for the grid entry. My final message suggests that this is wrong?

You've still to find one answer that's too short for the entry space, gitto (and the penultimate word of the final message is important).
