Well we finished! The hardest I've done so far, so thanks all for the nudges. Definitely worth the effort.

bodhere - in the thirteenth the def is the first 2 words; the wordplay is a phrase of two words of two letters each meaning "aware of", of which the first letter is dropped, and that's followed by the "limits", ie outer letters, of Eros.

I know the answer to the fourteenth and the extra letter but, if I did work out how to parse it, I've now forgotten. Perhaps someone else can jump in.

Thank you so much, Will37. Both doh, so obvious when explained. I got stuck with trying to use tube for the subway.

Bodhere, at Will’s request I have deleted his two posts, he felt they gave away too much. Your post therefore won’t make much sense but I’ll leave it in.

Got there in the end, closest yet to throwing in the towel. Hints here helped a lot, so thanks to all. What also helped was remembering how down clues are numbered!

The payoff at the end was worth the pain, and educational into the bargain.

Revised post -
I've just remembered the parsing of the 14th. Take a 6-letter word for "subway" with a repeated letter at its heart. Drop one of those two letters and from the remaining 5-letter non-word the last letter is the extra one and the remaining four letters are a word for "air".

Brilliant. I now have the extra letters message and the theme. I am having real problems getting my brain around the instructions! I have completed instructions 4 and 5 and can see the general shape required but I am really struggling to identify the quotation. Any tips?

Lovely puzzle. I'd feel I understood my solution more completely if someone explained the wordplay of three clues...
Fight maiden... (across)
Resonances... (down)
American's brick (down)
