I don't like this device when it's used to generate extra letters. I think it's flawed because there's no 'wordplay' as such and none of the letters are superfluous because they're all needed for the defs (I've mentioned this before, but it doesn't appear to bother other solvers).
It's becoming a very popular device, sadly.

Just realised that I'd misunderstood the clue. Knowing the extra letter that I needed, I took the last word of the clue in a military sense which left me wondering how the first two letters of the solution were derived. Chambers has confirmed a word that I didn't know.

I can't get started on grid fill.
The 10 letter clue that starts with 'Seeing vegan' I assume has to start with a V? But I don't think there are any Vs in the top row.

It's an anagram, but it doesn't start with a 'v', lumen.

Thanks, Drxx. I'm staying with my mother, who was an enthusiastic solver back in the 80s. I thought it would be good if we at least got to the theme this week, for old times sake!

Nothing so esoteric, Drxx. Whistle is part of the name of my village. However, as I suspect you spotted, my mother is tickled by the idea of being Whistler's Mother. :)

Have made good progress since my last post.
But as it's now Tuesday I would be grateful for help on the sixth down clue, Register all...
And the 6 letter acrosses are really stumping me, position-wise, so a help with Note ginger cat... and South, aspect to the west of that, would be very welcome.

6th down - the usual US troops, but there aren't any once you reverse it (def 'Register').
'Note ginger...' all reversed - 'note' abbrev + 'ginger' (3 letters) + cat (3 letters) then remove a letter.
'South aspect...' is all you need - the latter (5 letters) to the west of the former (maybe check Chambers for the synonym).

Thanks Drxx, I have a full grid, the only one I don't get is the across clue 'Very good very enthusiastic...'
So on to the endgame. Penny hasn't dropped, although I know the world we must be in.
The two wordplay only answers are not yielding much.
