Thought that was the most likely. I just dont get it.
Regional pronunciation differences perhaps not helping on this one.

Yes you need a long southern a in the first word for the spoonerism to work.
This was definitely harder than last week.2d held me up the longest until I worked out what kind of sign the setter meant, and I initially had the wrong anagram for 19d so could not parse it. Got there in the end. I agree 7d slices rather than takes out stones.

15d and 23a have stumped me.

How should I “read” the clues? What kind of clues are they?

15 a double definition
23 a reversal, so also double definition, but for the second definition you need to read the solution in reverse, indicated by “kicked back”

jazzgirl: Yes, you can listen to the whole album on bandcamp: https://robblivion.bandcamp.com/album/stoner-mandolin

The musician's name is clearly fake / a bad pun.
Back in the day, a goofy name like that would be used by a famous musician playing as sideman on a label for which he was not under contract. [For example, Charlie Parker = "Charlie Chan", Cannonball Adderley = "Buckshot La Funke", ...] But that's clearly not the case here. 🤣

@geeker, thanks for the link.

My username is rather a misnomer nowadays as I much prefer Vivaldi 😀
