An enjoyably quick solve - leaving time to get back to yesterday’s monster which I’ve hardly started due to entertaining friends most of the day. Better get to it before my hubby whisks me away to the DIY shop!

Five off the pace after 35mins and still five off the pace when I threw in the towel after an hour . The missing ones were 18a,26a, 3d,16d and 17d .
Looked up via ?????? -not the most obvious fish at 17d
Surprised that 20d & 22d used the same device.

Hi, all. Thanks for all the humour.
Enjoyable, but stuck in SW (16,17, 18,21 & 26 elude me). Any hints appreciated.
Thanks

Hi BarryC.
16: definition is 1st word, parses as 3 (shorten a four letter word for type of beer) + 5 (leafy vegetable)
17: parses as 2 (usual “Everyman’s”) + 6 (“assigned a counterpart), definition is last word.
Does that help?

Brendan @14. In the days when I could hear properly, I used to use that Rod Stewart song as a guitar (rather than a 7d) teaching aid. I was always bemused by the lyric "coldest winter in almost 14 years"...er, that would be 13 years, then...?
