Too much information, WS?

Although this was a gentle, fairly easy puzzle, I think we're starting to stray into overly-revealing posts....

Point taken - I was just surprised how easy this one was following two tough ones that I failed to complete. I will be more careful in future. Thanks

Darla - if you insert 5 letters into an 8 letter title you should finish up with 13 letters.

Silly me, I should have read the instructions more closely. I read it as a 5-letter item PLUS the thematic letter. I don't submit anyway, so I'll leave it there. Wouldn't even know how to send mail to the UK. Thanks for the correction, smithsax.

After reading comments from early finishers on Friday evening, I assumed that the "item" would be something pretty familiar and that I'd be quietly kicking myself for not seeing it sooner. Not a bit of it. When I eventually came up with a possible solution and used Google - dictionaries being of no use - to verify it, it turned out to be something I had never before in my life heard of.

Surely, Will37 - "it turned out to be something of which I had never before in my life heard."

True Pedantry must not be allowed to die out undefended!

I'm chagrined that the crafty sting in the tail of this otherwise soft, but witty, old puzzle (except for 26d) appears to have been well and truly outed by others - I was schadenfreudelich looking forward to a massacre at the hands of Mr Green and his elves (surely he must have a whole hi-ho of them) of complacent veteran solvers falling for the obvious - but wrong - option.

I’m slightly concerned by Quixote referring to the “the obvious - but wrong - option”. This all seemed quite straightforward to me and I don’t see alternative solutions so not sure whether I have the correct option or the obvious but wrong option!

If there's an obvious trap then I've fallen into it as well. Seems to be one (fairly) obvious solution that works to me. Agree it's not in dictionaries and I'd also never previously heard of it. But a quick google suggests it's right
