Brendan, as you probably know, parsing isn't my strong point, but...

Spanish.... the word for Singular moves the letter for Spain (offering new location for Spain) to give a Spanish city.

You're right about K1, brendan and the region has two Ks.
Yes for the animal/'familiar' - then it's a word like frosty for 'frightening' (I think it's a loose synonym but just about works).
A slang shortening of 'passions' minus 'he'.

There were originally 5 (I think) 'K' designated mountains but 4 of them were renamed.

That's great, thanks Malone, thanks Drxx:-)

(can't believe that I didn't think that if there is a K2 there should be a K1) 🤬🤔

Have about half the solves for this, but I'm struggling to make any inroads in getting the grid. Am afraid my initial idea for 1a is incorrect. I currently have the first letter of 'Tchaikovsky, say...' as the fourth letter of 1a. Any pointers/hints would be greatly appreciated xx

Hi Buzzermaster,

I think you might have gone a bit off track.

The first letter of "Tchaikovsky ..." is the second letter of 1a which is a 5 letter word meaning "goes off" as food might and also a word for "acquisitions" although it's not the first synonym that might leaps to mind - think what the victor in war might 'acquire'
