Can anyone help with the following clue

Youngster is collecting degree about old bones.

Clue length undetermined

The 'youngster' would be a lion, with 'o' and 'd' inside a word in the clue (in chambers it's the first part of a 2 word definition).

Hard to see, on first examination, what the effect of the three areas is? As solutions often cross from one to another we are told.
Just cold solving for now. Have a couple of long acrosses, so if I can find a long 'down' that would get things moving.

The various symmetries only confused the issue for me (but made for a nice endgame) so the lack of answer lengths is unjustifiable in my opinion.
Alternative wordplays/answers should have been carefully excluded but I was held up by one, and there are a few more issues (I think) with some of the clues.
Not entirely fair, if you ask me, and not exactly fun.

I am really struggling with this, I think the "form of transport" clue is a long across and the "chance five will escape" is a long down answer.

Some answers run the whole length of the grid across/down, gitto. I think lumen is looking for the first of the downs.

But I have just found my 1st 12 letter across answer.

I ignored the symmetry instructions (they were certainly no help to me) and just treated it as a plain carte blanche. The lack of answer lengths certainly upped the difficulty significantly.
