If any setters look at the thread I'd like to offer the following. What I find is that if I can cold solve about 5 clues it is worth persevering - however hard the slog. This forum is always a help if I get stuck so again thanks to those who contribute.

I thought you’d completely given the game away meadowboy - it seemed very convincing to me! I’m guessing by the fact I can’t find Arthur Compton in the grid it was a red herring.

I’m nowhere near the actual answer so any hints welcome.

It's really helpful to know that the three synonyms start with the same letter as the category. If you have the right word for the category, the initials should give you something to go on.

Thanks drxx. The way I’d read the preamble I thought the letter had to be an M. I now have the correct letter and category.
