Rather a large omission on that site - nothing from PR, WPR or Clueless!

Forgive the ridiculously trivial note but had to get this out of my head - clue 11 would probably have been better as p**?. There you go, all better now. Nurse?

Interesting Jono. But what would the response be if you gave chatgpt the word?

I repeated jono's query to ChatGPT but also included the answer to each clue. Here's what came back:

All three clues are clever and well-crafted, but in my opinion, the best one is "Suggestion to take knight after second pawn advanced (5)" because it uses a concise and elegant wordplay that requires the solver to understand chess terminology. The "second pawn advanced" refers to the pawn in front of the knight on the chessboard, and "take knight" is a chess move that involves capturing the opposing knight. Together, they form the word SPARK, which means a suggestion or a hint. This clue has a clear and precise surface meaning that leads to a satisfying "aha" moment when the solver realizes the underlying chess connection.

The other two clues are also excellent, but they rely more on indirect associations and puns. "Odds a great horse might shine (7)" uses the phrase "might shine" as a synonym for "sparkle," which is a bit of a stretch and requires the solver to make an extra leap of logic. Similarly, "They may be lively and likely on the radio (6)" uses a homophone ("likely" sounds like "lightning") to suggest the answer SPARKS, which can refer to lively or electric phenomena. While both of these clues are clever and entertaining, they may not be as satisfying to solve as the chess-themed clue because they require a more subjective interpretation of the wordplay.

So it clearly did not "understand" what either tyke's or dorrien's clues were referring to. But I still won, so.....

FWIW, "indirect associations and puns" are what make good clues in my opinion. The bot was unable to make the leap to ARKLE that made for the aha moment in the real winning clue.
