My thanks too to ChrisE - I was reading 1d the other way, with 'goes over ' as the indicator and '(being) held up' as the fodder!

1d has an alternate parsing of (4,2), but it involves a double use of "what". Surely straight reversal was intended.
I also questioned "cleanser", but in the USA solutions for (hand) washing dishes are sometimes labeled as .

"labeled as 2"...I typed some bracket characters the board didn't recognize.

Earlier I finished it all except one clue and left it for a while to simmer.
However, I still can’t get 1a.
Maybe I have a letter wrong.
