Forgot to mention: struggled with 15, clue seemed awkward but I (American) am not familiar with the solution so possibly missed something.

A more satisfying Everyman this week; tougher as well. Chambers (24a, 8d) and theasaurus well used this time. Thanks for the 'thing' hint. Anagrams better disguised. Amusing anagrind in 18a. Enjoyed 1d and 2d, eventually!

I doubt you missed anything Geeker. 15 is a homophone for the first two syllables then the wine. “Patriotic once” might be more historically accurate.

I feel as if Everyman missed a trick in that his word for “mariners” would fit in 1d, making for an interesting cross reference :-)

Cannot make head nor tail of the parsing for 2d. Even the definition is obscure to me.
Could anyone explain it and put me out of my misery?

Thanks for that Smot.
But I think "cleansing" is the wrong word entirely. It should have been "soothing" or something of similar meaning IMO.

Hi Heleninglos,

1d - definition is "what creates a gap", but the answer when reversed/'being held up' is also a word for "goes over"
