Thanks for explanation re 7d Sealion, and apologies for late response - I had to go out. Not a very good clue IMO; rather clumsy!

Hi Loubylou, I agree that there were quite a few obscure words in today's crossword, like the gorge in 9d (never heard of that term) 20d (never heard of that) and 11a (which I'd never heard of either, but it was gettable as it was a primary, and just needed a google search to confirm, so I'm not complaining about that!)

I think 1a was a really poor clue since the Marilyn part of the clue (the first word) was somebody not at all well known. The second word is a 3-letter abreiviation for an endearment or lover, with the R of rusty inserted into it.

Thanks for the various hints. Enjoyed this overall, esp 3D - he attended my local school.

Not so much of a write in for me. Had to really keep trying for a few of the clues. Had 5d wrong for ages which didn't help.

Brendan if you're there your guys broke my heart. 😀

Thanks! I was overthinking it... thinking of the two-letter abbreviation of British, and then that R at the end made me think maybe the king was GR, then what would go in the middle?

Oops... I meant 19 not 18
