Many thanks to Brendan and Propero for pointing me in the right direction. I didn't know the Liam one. I still can't see 57d.

I've been for a good walk in Killerton with a friend, cloudy but cold, but good to see the daffs and the fritillaria etc. I reckon I now have over two thirds filled in, but a number still elude me. Of the other straightforward clues, I cannot see the answer to 30ac or 9d (is it a film actress?, what is the outlaw?), or 37d where one of my crossers may be wrong. The others I haven't got are all symbolic. I must start cooking now. I'll struggle on after the Archers.

Thanks Roof, I'm glad you enjoyed your walk. I used to go out with a girl who was a fan of the Archers so I'd listen to it from time to time - I really like Lynda Snell;-)

57a - 5 letter "shifts" as in 'we'll take it in shifts' or 'we'll take it in ?????' goes around usual 2 letters for "each" - definition is "we serve drinks" but it's a bit misleading because it's an inanimate object rather that a person.

9d - 3 letter "prince" (shortened nickname of a Shakespeare prince) then 5 letter "outlaw" reversed/'backed' then 2 letter "lines" (think trains) - yes, it is a specific (American) "actress"

37d - 2 letter "sailor" + 4 letter "another (sailor)" minus first letter/'with no Joint' - definition is "surprised"

presume you mean 57 across? First 3 words are the def, then a word for shifts encloses the usual abbreviation for each.
9 is a film actress - usual crossword equivalent for prince should get you started ... the outlaw is five letters reversed in the middle - and is actually the Christian name of another American actress.
30 is a word for appetite (especially "... for life") - one letter short of a word for healthy.
37 is one usual equivalent of sailor followed by another without j ... for surprised, think: taken ...

Think I'm in danger of a crash and burn here. I've got about 6 clues left and have had for a good time. Not helped by the stress of the football this PM. One more day in the subconscious and then I may have to call it a day.

Hi Roof,

In my recent post @116, I was referring to today's game between Liverpool and Arsenal (Rocky is an avid Arsenal fan with his username being an homage to the late Rocky Rocastle of Arsenal).

My earlier posts were referencing next Sunday's game between my team West Ham and Arsenal.

I feel the game is a sad reflection on my attempt to finish this crossword. 😄
