Thanks, acornz, I came to the same conclusion around midnight.

All done other than that one pesky letter - I must be stupid, because I have read and re-read the preamble and still await the PDM.

Word staring finished - grid full - clever Solution to that final entry. Definitely no ambiguity.

Just that one letter to go. I can justify the letters, but not the order.

I also don't understand 24A although I do have the answer.

Thank you, Woracle; that was fun. Believe it or not, I struggled not with 35d but with 38d - and for for quite a while - before the obvious struck me between the eyes. Truly a bear of very little brain!.

deviant, like you I haven't a scooby about 24A but I think the answer is unquestionable.
